One of the first decisions in any Odoo project is which edition to run: the free Community edition or the paid Enterprise edition. Both are excellent. The right choice depends on the features you need and your budget.
Odoo Community
Community is free, open source and surprisingly capable. It covers CRM, Sales, Purchase, Inventory, basic Accounting, Project, Website and more. For many small and growing businesses, Community does everything they need, especially with a few well-built custom modules on top.
Odoo Enterprise
Enterprise is licensed per user and adds a large set of features on top of Community, including full double-entry accounting with bank reconciliation and reporting, Studio for no-code customization, advanced manufacturing and quality, subscriptions, field service, sign, documents and more. It also includes official support and upgrade services.
How to decide
Ask yourself:
- Do you need full accounting? Enterprise accounting is far richer than Community. - Which apps do you depend on? Some apps such as advanced manufacturing, subscriptions and documents are Enterprise-only. - Do you want official upgrades and support? Enterprise includes them. - What is your budget and team size? Enterprise pricing scales with users.
A common path
Many businesses start on Community to prove value at low cost, then move to Enterprise as they grow and need the extra apps and support. Because both share the same core, that path is smooth when the implementation is built correctly.
