Configuration is not customization
The single biggest cost lever is whether your change is configuration or customization. Configuration is the settings, fields and views Odoo already lets you adjust without code; it is quick and low-cost. Customization is new code: bespoke logic, custom screens, automations and integrations. Most "can Odoo do X?" questions are answered by configuration, and only the remainder needs paid development.
What drives a customization quote
- Configuration vs code. A new field or a rearranged form is minutes. A new automated workflow across several models is a project.
- How many moving parts. A change touching one model is contained. One that ripples through sales, inventory and accounting needs care so nothing else breaks.
- Reports and documents. A tweak to an existing layout is small; a fully bespoke report with its own data is more.

Small, well-defined customizations are among the most affordable Odoo work there is, which is exactly why they are worth scoping precisely rather than bundling into a vague "make it fit us" request. Larger, cross-module changes are proper projects and are quoted as such. As always, a short discovery turns the request into a number tied to your real workflow.
Getting more change for less
- Exhaust configuration first. Ask what standard Odoo already does before paying to build it.
- Batch related changes. Several tweaks to the same area cost less together than one at a time.
- Describe the outcome, not the mechanism. Tell the team the result you want and let them find the cheapest way to it.
- Keep it upgrade-safe so you pay once, not every release.
