ERP comparison

Odoo vs ERPNext

These are the two credible open-source ERPs, so the comparison is genuinely close. ERPNext is more purely open. Odoo has the larger ecosystem and a split edition model that matters more than people expect.

Stronger website and eCommerce capability in the same suite

Easier to hire for, and easier to replace a partner

No licence cost at any scale, which matters for large user counts

No edition trap, so a feature never disappears behind an upgrade

A simpler, more transparent model overall

The verdict

Which one fits you.

Choose Odoo if

You want the larger ecosystem, a more polished experience, strong eCommerce and POS, and a wide market of partners and developers.

Choose ERPNext if

Fully open source with no paid edition is a firm requirement, or a very large user count makes per-user licensing the dominant cost.

Questions

About Odoo and ERPNext.

Is ERPNext a serious alternative to Odoo?

Yes. It is the closest genuine open-source competitor. The honest split is ecosystem and polish for Odoo, licence purity and cost at scale for ERPNext.

Is Odoo Community really free?

The Community edition is LGPL and free to self-host. Some apps, including Payroll and certain accounting and quality features, are Enterprise only. Check the specific features you need against the edition, because that is where most surprises come from.

Which is easier to customise?

Both are Python and both extend cleanly. Odoo has more existing modules to start from, which usually means less to build. ERPNext's Frappe framework is elegant and has a smaller learning curve for simple customisation.
