Odoo Community is free and open source, and in Odoo 19 it includes 34 apps: Sales, CRM, Inventory, Purchase, Invoicing, Manufacturing, Point of Sale, Website and more. Odoo Enterprise is paid per user and adds 44 apps on top, including full Accounting, Studio, Helpdesk, Payroll and Barcode. The right choice depends less on company size than on one question: are the apps you need in the Community list?
Applies to Odoo 19, with Odoo 20 changes noted. App lists taken from the Odoo 19 and Odoo 20 source code in October 2026.
What is the difference between Odoo Community and Enterprise?
They are the same product at different depths. Enterprise is Community plus a set of extra apps and modules, all built on the same core.
| Community | Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|
| Licence | LGPL, open source, no licence fee | Odoo Enterprise licence, paid per user |
| Apps in Odoo 19 | 34 | The same 34, plus 44 Enterprise-only apps |
| Hosting | Your own server, or any hosting provider | Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or your own server |
| Odoo's upgrade service | Not included | Included for standard apps and Studio customizations |
| Mobile | Installable web app (PWA) | Installable web app (PWA) |
| Customization | Code, or apps from the Odoo Apps Store | Code, Apps Store, and Studio for no-code changes |
Two of these rows are often reported wrongly. On mobile, Odoo's own documentation recommends the installable web app, and the code for it ships in Community, so Community users can add Odoo to their phone's home screen too. On upgrades, Odoo's upgrade service comes with the Enterprise subscription and covers standard apps and Studio customizations, not your custom modules (see what an Odoo upgrade costs).
Which apps are in Community, and which need Enterprise?
This is the list that decides it. Each Odoo app declares itself as an application in its code, and these are all of them in Odoo 19, grouped by business area.
| Area | Included in Community (free) | Enterprise only |
|---|---|---|
| Finance | Invoicing, Expenses | Accounting, Documents, Sign, Equity, ESG |
| Sales and marketing | Sales, CRM, Point of Sale, Restaurant, Email Marketing, SMS Marketing, Marketing Card, Events, Surveys, Live Chat | Subscriptions, Rental, Appointments, Marketing Automation, Social Marketing, WhatsApp, Phone |
| Websites | Website, eCommerce, eLearning, Online Jobs | (no separate app) |
| Marketplaces | none | Amazon, Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop connectors |
| Operations | Inventory, Purchase, Manufacturing, Repairs, Maintenance, Fleet | Barcode, Quality, Product Lifecycle Management, Field Service, Planning, Internet of Things |
| Shipping | none | DHL, FedEx, UPS, USPS, bpost, Easypost, Sendcloud, Shiprocket, Starshipit and Envia connectors |
| Service | Project, To-Do | Helpdesk, Timesheets |
| HR | Employees, Attendances, Time Off, Recruitment, Skills Management, Lunch | Payroll, Appraisals, Employee Referral, Frontdesk |
| Productivity | Discuss, Calendar, Contacts, Data Recycle | Studio, Knowledge, Approvals, AI, Meeting Rooms, Databases |
Odoo 20 keeps the same 34 Community apps and adds two Enterprise apps: ShipStation shipping and Obox, for managing IoT devices.
Does Community have a simpler version of the Enterprise apps?
For several of them, yes, and this is where most comparisons mislead. Some Enterprise apps are an upgrade of something Community already does:
- Invoicing vs Accounting. Community Invoicing handles customer invoices, vendor bills and payments. The Enterprise Accounting app is built on top of it and adds the accountant's tools, such as the financial reports.
- Task logs vs Timesheets. Community lets your team log time on project tasks. The Enterprise Timesheets app adds the timesheet grid and validation on top of that same data.
- Inventory vs Barcode. Community Inventory runs your warehouse. The Enterprise Barcode app adds a scanner-first interface for picking, receiving and counting.
So "Community has no accounting" is not true. It has invoicing and payments. What it lacks is the full accounting app most accountants expect.
Which edition should you choose?
Start from your list of apps, not from the price:
| If you need | Choose |
|---|---|
| Only apps from the Community column | Community, and spend the licence money on implementation |
| Full Accounting, Studio, Helpdesk, Payroll or Barcode as a daily tool | Enterprise |
| Community apps plus one or two missing features | Community plus a targeted app from the Odoo Apps Store, or a small custom module |
| Odoo to manage hosting and upgrades for you | Enterprise on Odoo Online or Odoo.sh |
| Full control of the code and server, with an in-house or partner team | Either, self-hosted |
Our rule of thumb: if three or more apps you need are in the Enterprise column, Enterprise is usually cheaper than closing the gap with custom work. If it is one or two, Community plus a module is often the better deal.
Can you extend Community instead of buying Enterprise?
Often, yes. A large part of the gap can be closed with apps from the Odoo Apps Store, from us and other publishers, covering things like approvals, dashboards, POS tools and accounting helpers. Check three things before you rely on one: that it supports your Odoo version, that its licence allows your use, and that the publisher still updates it.
What you cannot add to Community is anything Odoo only delivers as a service, such as Odoo's upgrade service or Odoo Online hosting.
Can you switch from Community to Enterprise later?
Yes. Odoo documents the switch from Community to Enterprise for self-hosted databases, and your data comes with you. The usual pattern is to start on Community, prove the core processes, and move to Enterprise when an Enterprise app becomes worth paying for. If you have custom modules, test them on a copy of the database first, because they now run next to the Enterprise modules.
