Odoo Marketing: Email, SMS and Automated Journeys That Hand Over Cleanly
The reason to run marketing inside Odoo is not the email builder. It is that the list you are mailing is your actual customer database, the reply lands on the actual opportunity, and nobody has to explain why the CRM and the mailing tool disagree about who a person is.
What Odoo Marketing actually is
Marketing in Odoo is three apps rather than one. Email Marketing sends campaigns to lists. SMS Marketing does the same over text. Marketing Automation, which is Enterprise, builds multi-step journeys that branch on what a recipient does.
None of them will beat a dedicated marketing platform on template design, deliverability tooling or analytics. What they have instead is identity: the person you are mailing is the same record as the customer, the lead and the portal user. There is no sync, no field mapping, and no argument about which system is authoritative.
For a business already running sales and support in Odoo, that removes the most persistent problem in marketing tooling, which is that the marketing database and the sales database quietly drift apart.
Lists, segmentation and where recipients come from
A mailing goes to a mailing list or to a filtered set of records from any model, which is more powerful than it first sounds. You can mail every customer who bought a particular product last year, every lead in a stage, or every contact in a country, without exporting anything or building a segment in a second tool.
Because the filter runs against live data, the audience is correct at send time rather than correct when somebody last exported a CSV.
Two habits matter. Keep lists clean, since repeatedly mailing addresses that bounce degrades your sending reputation. And record where a contact came from, because the answer to "which channel produces customers" is only available if the source field was filled in consistently a year ago.
Deliverability, which decides whether any of this works
This is the part people skip and then blame the software for.
Getting mail into inboxes requires SPF, DKIM and DMARC records published for your sending domain, a sending reputation built gradually rather than by mailing forty thousand people on day one, and list hygiene that removes bounces and long-term non-openers.
None of that is Odoo-specific and all of it is your responsibility. A first campaign that lands in spam is almost never a platform failure. It is usually an unauthenticated domain, a cold IP, or a list that should not have been mailed.
Do not mail purchased lists. Beyond the legal exposure in most jurisdictions, the complaint rate poisons the reputation of the domain you also use for invoices and support, and that damage takes months to undo.
Automation, and building journeys that are actually maintainable
Marketing Automation triggers on an event, waits, checks a condition, and acts. A welcome sequence, a lead-nurturing flow, a re-engagement campaign or a post-purchase series are all the same shape.
The temptation is to build an elaborate branching machine on day one. Resist it for the same reason you should resist a fifteen-stage pipeline: nobody can debug it, and when results are disappointing you cannot tell which branch was responsible.
Start with one linear flow of three or four steps. Measure it. Add a branch only when you have a specific question the branch answers.
The handover to sales, which is the point
A lead that engages should reach a salesperson while the engagement is recent, with the context attached.
Because it is one database, this is configuration rather than integration: scoring or stage rules move a nurtured contact into the sales pipeline, and the salesperson opening it can see exactly what was sent and what was clicked. That context changes the first conversation, and it is the single most valuable thing this module gives a business that also sells through people.
Define the handover rule explicitly. Marketing and sales disagreeing about what "qualified" means is an organisational problem that software surfaces rather than solves, but leaving it undefined guarantees the friction.
Where Odoo Marketing will fight you
Template design is functional. The builder produces clean, professional email. It is not a best-in-class design tool, and highly art-directed campaigns will feel constrained.
Analytics are adequate rather than deep. Opens, clicks, bounces and unsubscribes are all there. Attribution modelling and cohort analysis are not.
Automation is Enterprise. For a Community user, marketing is broadcast only, which is a genuine limitation on nurturing.
Sending volume has practical limits, particularly on Odoo Online. High-volume senders should plan their sending infrastructure rather than assume it scales silently.
How it connects to everything else
Contacts are the same partners as in CRM, Sales and Accounting. Engagement is visible on the lead. Website forms and live chat feed the same records. Purchase history from Sales makes real segmentation possible, so "customers who bought X and not Y" is a filter rather than a project. Events and Surveys plug into the same contacts.
Where to start
Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC before sending anything, and verify them. Send your first campaign to a small engaged segment rather than the whole database, to build reputation gradually. Fill in the source field from day one. Build one short linear automation before any branching. Then agree, in writing, what marketing hands to sales and when, because that definition will outlast every campaign you run.
FAQ
Odoo Marketing, answered.
Which marketing apps are free?
Email Marketing and SMS Marketing are in Community, so bulk mailing, lists, segmentation and basic statistics cost nothing beyond sending fees. Marketing Automation, which builds multi-step journeys, is Enterprise.
What is the difference between Email Marketing and Marketing Automation?
Email Marketing sends a campaign to a list at a point in time. Marketing Automation builds a flow that reacts to behaviour over time, so a contact who opens but does not click gets a different next step from one who clicks. The first is a broadcast, the second is a journey.
Does Odoo handle email deliverability?
It sends what you tell it to send. Landing in inboxes depends on SPF, DKIM and DMARC records on your domain, a warmed sending reputation and clean list hygiene. This is configuration you own, and skipping it is the usual reason a first campaign performs badly.
Can I mail a purchased contact list?
You can technically, and you should not. Purchased lists produce spam complaints that damage the sending reputation of your own domain, and in many jurisdictions mailing them without consent is unlawful. The damage is not reversible on a short timescale.
How do marketing contacts relate to CRM?
Mailing lists are built from the same partner and lead records the sales team uses, so engagement is visible on the opportunity itself. A salesperson opening a lead can see what that person was sent and what they did with it.
Does it track unsubscribes and consent?
Yes. Unsubscribe handling, opt-out state and blacklisting are built in and respected across mailings. The record of consent, and the policy for how you obtained it, remains your responsibility.
